Richard Feynman’s blunt take on knowledge vs understanding
Richard Feynman, Nobel-winning physicist and legendary explainer-of-things, had no patience for pretense. He made a career out of calling out fake understanding, even in himself. One of his most famous insights is this:
“I learned very early the difference between knowing the name of something and knowing something.”
In other words: just because you can name it, define it, or pass a test on it… doesn’t mean you understand it.

Small business owners, especially neurodivergent ones, are often brilliant at pattern recognition, intuition, and absorbing a lot quickly. But that doesn’t always translate to action.
Knowing about content strategy, AI tools, or sales funnels is not the same as knowing how to build one for your own brand.

We collect terms without context. We know the jargon, but not the function.
We confuse information with implementation. Learning feels like progress, but nothing has shipped.

When learning a new system or tool, pretend you’re explaining it to your “Tuesday brain.” Use plain language. Avoid acronyms unless they’re common knowledge.
2. Teach what you’re learning, before you feel ready.
Post a short video, write a thread, or explain it to a peer. Don’t wait until you’ve mastered it. Understanding deepens when you try to teach it.
3. Audit your content for “faux clarity.”
Are you using big words because you’re unclear, or because they sound smart? Rewrite jargon-heavy copy until it’s crystal clear.
4. Shift from passive to active learning.
Stop hoarding bookmarks and start summarizing what you’ve read. Use your notes. Make flashcards. Create a cheatsheet. Interact with the knowledge.
5. Redesign how you learn based on how you process.
If you’re visual, sketch it. If you’re verbal, record yourself explaining it. If you need structure, make a checklist. Don’t mimic how others learn, use your brain’s native language.
Understanding feels slower, but builds momentum
Knowledge can feel fast and satisfying. You get the hit of “I know this!” without having to struggle.
Understanding is slower. It feels humbling. You make more mistakes. But it creates long-term traction. You build something that lasts.
Feynman was obsessed with understanding, not because he wanted to look smart, but because he wanted to build things that worked.

Many of us, especially women, neurodivergent folks, or people from historically excluded communities, were praised for being “smart” but not taught how to understand. We were rewarded for quick answers, not deep questions.
